RELAX! SELF HELP AND MY MENTAL ILLNESS BY AL GARCIA

It's not everyday I get to write about a book written by one of my friends, but today is the day.

Relax! Self Help and My Mental Illness is what Al describes as a story of his mental illness combined with research on the American self-help industry done for his graduate degree.

"My mind races all day long. I often feel overpoweringly desperate just moving from one room to the next. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to have a break from my asphyxiating anxieties for a window of 5 seconds. On a good day, my obsessions will leave me alone for for maybe 30 seconds at a time. But usually I'm fighting a battle all the time it's like there's no rest it's like cramming for an exam every day with no relief in sight no study breaks no breathers."

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF GABRIELE BASILICO

Dunkerque , 1984

This is the work of Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico who creates haunting portraits of urban environments.

Le Touquet , 1984

His pictures are marked by an eerie stillness — and a notable absence of people — that propels architecture and landscape to the forefront and turns the viewer’s attention to frequently overlooked places.

'STAR' AT THE HAMPTON COURT FLOWER SHOW

It's the final day of the Hampton Court Flower Show. This caught my eye:

"Star is a satirical comment on the Western's world's obsession with fashion, branding and conspicious consumption; how deep-rooted cultural and spiritual traditions are overwhelmed and replaced by all things shallow and superficial."

Hampton Court Flower Show is sponsored by the Daily Mail.
